象辞 · Image
地中有山，谦；君子以裒多益寡，称物平施。
Within the earth, a mountain: The image of Modesty. Thus the superior man reduces that which is too much, and augments that which is too little. He weighs things and makes them equal.

Modesty is the ONLY hexagram in the entire I Ching where all six lines are favorable — a mountain hidden within the earth, possessing great substance yet displaying none of it. The judgment "Success; the superior man carries things through" promises that the modest person achieves lasting completion. The Image "the superior man reduces what is excessive and augments what is insufficient, weighing things and distributing evenly" reveals that true modesty is about balance and justice. The third line "a superior man with merit who is modest carries things to completion — good fortune" shows that the highest form of modesty is having real accomplishments yet claiming no credit. The Commentary declares: "The Way of Heaven diminishes fullness and blesses the modest; the Way of Earth transforms fullness and flows toward the modest; spirits and gods harm the full and bless the modest; the Way of Humanity despises the full and favors the modest."
