The eight trigrams are the fundamental symbol system of the I Ching, each composed of three lines (yin ⚋ or yang ⚊). Start by memorizing basic symbols, then learn element correspondences, and finally understand Early/Later Heaven arrangements.

乾，天也，故称乎父。坤，地也，故称乎母。震一索而得男，故谓之长男。巽一索而得女，故谓之长女。
Qian is Heaven, hence called Father. Kun is Earth, hence called Mother. Zhen, by a single line seeking, obtained male, hence called eldest son. Xun, by a single line seeking, obtained female, hence called eldest daughter.
