The Receptive brings sublime success. The perseverance of a mare is advantageous. If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead, he goes astray; but if he follows, he finds guidance.

彖传 · Tuan Zhuan Commentary
至哉坤元，万物资生，乃顺承天。坤厚载物，德合无疆。含弘光大，品物咸亨。牝马地类，行地无疆，柔顺利贞。君子攸行，先迷失道，后顺得常。西南得朋，乃与类行；东北丧朋，乃终有庆。安贞之吉，应地无疆。
Supreme indeed is the originating power of Kun! All things owe their birth to it; it obediently receives Heaven. Kun is thick and carries all things; its virtue merges with the boundless. Containing, nurturing, glorifying, and enlarging, all things flourish. The mare belongs to the category of earth, traveling the earth without limit, yielding and obedient, favorable and correct. When the superior person travels, going first brings confusion and loss of way, following brings constancy. In the southwest one finds companions, traveling with those of like kind; in the northeast one loses companions, but in the end there is celebration. The good fortune of peaceful correctness responds to the boundlessness of earth.
