Subject Spirit (Yong Shen) Rule

The subject spirit for decision divination is flexible and determined by the specific matter involved. For career choices, use Officials; for financial choices, use Wealth; for relationship choices, use Wealth or Officials based on gender. When uncertain, the World line (self) serves as the primary reference -- examine the generating and controlling relationships between World and each option direction. The overall hexagram trend is often more important than any single subject spirit.
The Book of Changes cannot be kept at a distance; its Dao shifts constantly. It moves without staying, circulates through the six positions, ascends and descends without regularity, firm and yielding interchange -- it cannot be made into a fixed rule, but only adapts to change.
Therefore, the superior person at rest observes the images and ponders the texts; in action, observes the changes and ponders the divination. Thus aided by Heaven, there is good fortune and nothing unfavorable.
The Book of Changes traces things to their beginnings and follows them to their ends -- this constitutes its substance. The six lines intermingle, but each pertains to its proper time and context.
