Contemplation (Wind over Earth) and Approach (Earth over Lake) are inverse hexagrams — flip Contemplation upside down and you get Approach. Approach is drawing near from above, exerting influence downward; Contemplation is looking up from below, receiving instruction. Together they form the complete relationship of leading and being led, teaching and learning. In the Sequence of Hexagrams, Approach is necessarily followed by Contemplation — after drawing near comes the need for reflective observation, also hinting at the reversal after the "eighth month" peak.
