The story of the I Ching begins long before the text itself. During the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BCE), royal diviners practiced oracle bone divination They would drill holes into tortoise plastrons or ox scapulae, apply heat, and interpret the resulting cracks as messages from ancestors and spirits. The questions and outcomes were then inscribed on the bones — giving us China's earliest written records of divination.
In 1899, scholar Wang Yirong discovered archaic inscriptions on "dragon bones" sold in apothecaries — sparking the excavation of the Shang dynasty capital at Yinxu. Over 100,000 oracle bone fragments have been unearthed, revealing a civilization deeply devoted to divine communication. While not "I Ching divination" per se, oracle bone practice established the cultural foundation of reading symbolic patterns to discern the will of heaven.
Tradition holds that King Wen of Zhou, while imprisoned by the Shang tyrant King Zhou at Youli, doubled the eight trigrams attributed to the legendary Fuxi into 64 hexagrams and composed the hexagram statements (卦辞). This act of creative synthesis during captivity is one of Chinese civilization's most celebrated origin stories.
King Wen's son, the Duke of Zhou, is credited with composing the line statements (爻辞) for each of the six lines in every hexagram. Together, the hexagram and line statements transformed the I Ching from a symbolic system into a complete literary and divinatory text, blending natural imagery, social wisdom, and moral counsel.
According to the Records of the Grand Historian, Confucius became so devoted to the I Ching in his later years that he wore out the binding of his bamboo-strip copy three times. Tradition attributes the "Ten Wings" (十翼/易传) to Confucius and his disciples — a set of commentaries that fundamentally transformed the I Ching from a divination manual into a philosophical masterpiece.
The Ten Wings were revolutionary. The Great Commentary (系辞传) elevated yin-yang interaction to a universal principle — "One yin and one yang, this is called the Dao." The Discussion of Trigrams (说卦传) systematized the symbolic associations of each trigram. Through these commentaries, the I Ching transcended divination to become the foundational text of Chinese philosophy, claimed by Confucians, Daoists, and military strategists alike.

The Han Dynasty (206 BCE – 220 CE) marked another pinnacle. Scholars like Meng Xi and Jing Fang integrated astronomy, calendrics, and Five Phases theory into the I Ching framework, creating the "hexagram qi" theory and the Na Jia (Heavenly Stems Attachment) method. This transformed the I Ching into a precise predictive system — the ancestor of the Six Yao method still practiced today.
Song Dynasty Neo-Confucians gave the I Ching renewed philosophical life. Zhou Dunyi's Diagram of the Supreme Ultimate, Zhang Zai's cosmology of qi, the Cheng brothers' principle-based interpretation, and Zhu Xi's comprehensive synthesis in Commentary on the Original Meaning of the Zhou Yi — all reshaped how the classic was understood.
The I Ching's westward journey began with Jesuit missionaries in the 17th century. The most consequential encounter came in 1703, when Leibniz recognized that the yin-yang line sequences in Shao Yong's binary arrangement of hexagrams perfectly corresponded to his own binary number system — yang as 1, yin as 0. This discovery became a landmark in East-West intellectual exchange.
In the 20th century, James Legge's and Richard Wilhelm's translations brought the I Ching to Western audiences. Carl Jung's foreword to the Wilhelm edition introduced the concept of "synchronicity" — meaningful coincidence — as a framework for understanding divination. Jung's endorsement gave the I Ching unprecedented intellectual legitimacy in the West.
In the 21st century, the I Ching has found new relevance. Management theorists extract change leadership wisdom, psychologists use it as a tool for client self-exploration, and AI researchers draw inspiration from its binary structure.
Digital technology has made ancient divination accessible to everyone. What once required yarrow stalks or coins can now be faithfully simulated through algorithms. Dao Oracle embodies this trend, offering multiple online divination methods while preserving the essence of tradition.
Technology is merely the vessel; true wisdom lies in understanding the Dao of change. As the Great Commentary states: "When the Yi is exhausted, it transforms; when it transforms, it flows; when it flows, it endures." Over three millennia, the I Ching itself embodies the very principle of change it teaches — born from oracle bone cracks, shaped by sage-kings, elevated by philosophers, and reborn through digital technology. Its vitality lies precisely in its ceaseless transformation.
